Phytotherapy is a traditional medicine. It is based on the benefits of natural plants and foods to treat a number of ailments.

In this article, we focus on digestive disorders. How can you prevent food indigestion, bloating, stomach ache or heartburn using traditional medicine, more commonly known as phytotherapy?

1. Liquorice

Licorice is a perennial herbaceous plant. It is native to the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, Southwest Asia and the United States.

Combined with herbs such as peppermint, chamomile, etc. It can relieve digestive disorders, particularly dyspepsia and heartburn.

Tip: To prevent or combat ulcers or heartburn:

  • Infuse dried licorice root in water.

  • Drink 1 to 3 cups a day

2. Verbena officinalis

In phytotherapy, the flowering tops of verbena officinalis (different from lemon verbena) are used for their anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-diarrheal properties.

A perennial plant, it also stimulates the digestive system. It treats bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea or stomach spasms.

Tip: To relieve abdominal pain or digestive disorders:

  • Infuse verbena leaves for about eight (8) minutes in boiling water.

  • Drink this infusion after meals for better digestion.

3. Peppermint

Peppermint has many virtues. In fact, it’s an excellent natural remedy for minor digestive disorders, nausea and acute diarrhea. Peppermint essential oil is highly prized for its antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Tip: For difficult digestion or nausea:

  • Pour two (2) drops of peppermint essential oil onto a sugar cube.

  • Then put the sugar tile in an infusion.

  • Drink this infusion after meals to help digestion.

To prevent or treat certain ailments, it is often unnecessary to turn directly to medication. Herbal medicine, more commonly known as Phytotherapy, is generally just as effective.
